The Govmesh Project is a collaborative community initiative to facilitate civic engagement with local governance. The Project launched in February of 2011, this wiki being the first stage of development.

This wiki is a proof of concept, demonstrating what the Govmesh site might begin to look like as development continues. Please see the Govmesh local government portal to learn more.

Where are we?

Local governments on this wiki are organized according to the internal government hierarchies of each sovereign state on Earth, including both the member states of the United Nations, de facto states not members of the United Nations, Vatican City, and, although not themselves sovereign states, Antarctica and the International Space Station.

With a population estimated at approximately 6,900,000,000^(人19)[1], Planet Earth has no unitary government, however many inhabitants regard customary law as governing all sovereign states, while a mix of domestic laws and international private and public laws govern international waters.

What we're about

Apeing Wikipedia, the draft principles by which GovMesh operates are summarized in the form of five "pillars":

47px	GovMesh is a locality-oriented public information mesh pool. It incorporates elements of general and specialized encyclopedias, almanacs, and gazeteers, as well as other social networking and collaborative authorship technologies. GovMesh is not a soapbox, an advertising platform, a vanity press, or an indiscriminate collection of information. While GovMesh is an experiment in political assembly, it is not otherwise an experiment in anarchy or democracy, While organized in a hierarchical structure, GovMesh is not a site for global, national, regional, or in most cases, state or provincial public information: editors are asked to focus on articles related to their local governments. It is not an encyclopedia, dictionary, newspaper, travel guide, or a platform for leaked information; that kind of content should be contributed instead to other projects. Public source documents may be included insofar as they facilitate referencing.
47px	GovMesh has an immanent approach to point of view. We strive for articles that advocate no single point of view. Sometimes this requires representing multiple points of view, presenting each point of view accurately and in context, and not presenting any point of view as "the truth" or "the best view". Likewise photos should seek to avoid the monological, or God's eye, perspective. All articles must strive for verifiable accuracy: while deference will be given to unreferenced facts that are otherwise verifiable, we prefer that references be provided whenever possible. Editors' interpretations and opinions do not belong here: personal experiences are to be included only insofar as they succinctly contribute to public information. When in doubt, citing verifiable, authoritative sources, especially on controversial topics and when the subject is a living person, is preferred. When conflict arises over neutrality, discuss details on the talk page, and follow dispute resolution.
47px	GovMesh is free content that anyone can edit and distribute. Respect copyright laws, and avoid plagiarizing your sources. Non-free content is allowed under fair use, but please strive to find free alternatives to any media or content that you wish to add to Wikipedia. Since all your contributions are freely licensed to the public, no editor owns any article; all of your contributions can and will be mercilessly edited and redistributed.
47px	GovMeshers are encouraged to learn about compassionate communication, and to consider employing NVC principles in their encounters with other GovMeshers and individuals with an interest in GovMesh, both on the GovMesh Web site and in GovMesh-related gatherings and meetings. Absent a desire to learn or implement compassionate communication, GovMeshers should interact in a respectful and civil manner. Respect and be polite to your fellow GovMeshers, even when you disagree. Apply GovMesh etiquette, and avoid personal attacks. Find consensus, avoid edit wars, and remember that there are 4 articles on the GovMesh wiki to work on and discuss. Act in good faith, never disrupt GovMesh to illustrate a point, and assume good faith on the part of others. Be open and welcoming.
47px	GovMesh does not have firm rules. Rules on GovMesh are not fixed in stone, and the spirit of the rule trumps the letter of the rule. Be bold (but not reckless) in updating articles and do not worry about making mistakes. Your efforts do not need to be perfect; prior versions are saved, so no damage is irreparable.
